Power Africa has supported the development of 140 megawatts (MW) of electricity generation projects in Mali. In addition, various firms have received U.S. Embassy support to move transactions forward. The page below gives an overview of the energy sector in Mali and lists Power Africa’s financially closed transactions in the country, some of which are already online and generating critical electricity supply for the people of Mali.

MALI ENERGY SECTOR OVERVIEW

Population: 19.08 million | GDP (1): $17.16 billion

Mali currently has about 904 MW of grid-installed generation capacity to serve a population of over 19 million people. Although Mali is endowed with plentiful solar and hydro potential, its current generation capacity relies primarily on a combination of hydro, diesel and HFO. The Government of Mali (GOM) is adopting measures to increase the production of solar and wind, with a stated goal of increasing production to 28% of the generation mix by 2033. The GOM is also adopting measures to promote public private partnerships to facilitate foreign direct investment in critical energy and infrastructure projects. Mali has one state-owned electric utility - Energie du Mali S.A. (EDM) - which is dealing with creditworthiness and grid network infrastructure issues. Electricity demand is growing at about 10 percent per year, outpacing supply growth, which averaged 8.1 percent per year between 2005 and 2015. Mali’s government is working to expand its electricity supply and encourage investment in the energy sector to stimulate the economy.
