Sudan's transitional government, established in 2019 following the overthrow of former President Omar al-Bashir, faces significant challenges, including major economic reforms, re-establishing democratic governance institutions, resolving longstanding internal conflicts, and establishing transitional justice mechanisms to address human rights violations committed against Sudanese citizens during the Bashir era. In December 2020, the United States rescinded Sudan’s designation as a State Sponsor of Terrorism, which was in place since 1993.
USAID remains the largest donor of assistance to the people of Sudan. After decades of helping the Sudanese through conflict, famine, and ongoing emergency needs, USAID maintains a robust humanitarian portfolio and a growing development portfolio.
