Mining operations in Matam, in the Department of Kanel, particularly in the communes of Hamady Ounaré, Ndendory and Orkadiéré used to be received with hostilities by the community. Many residents lost their homes due to the expansion of this industry in the area. The mining companies were not complying with tax payments that could provide much needed support for local public services.
In an effort to support vaccine rollout and boost the COVID-19 pandemic response in Senegal, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced that it will provide $700,000 to UNICEF for vaccine readiness to the Government of Senegal. With these funds, UNICEF will reinforce Senegal’s cold chain to ensure safe distribution and delivery of vaccines nationwide, including those provided through the COVAX Facility. The funds will also be used to support the Government’s efforts to encourage the use of safe and effective vaccines and continued application of barrier measures in communities.
Beer is a small town in the Thiès region, 70 km east of Dakar. Located in the Niayes, the main horticultural production area of Senegal, the village is home to many market gardens. Hundreds of men and women plough and dig their fields here throughout the year to produce vegetables and other crops.
The natural region of southern Senegal has always been characterized by its lush vegetation, and among others, beautiful stands of palm groves. This is the case in Bambaly, in the administrative region of Sédhiou. Palm trees line the shallows and along the Casamance River. Threatened by abusive exploitation in the early 2000’s, the palm groves were the subject of management watched by the populations. The latter have initiated a management method called "thon" (which in the local language means the periodic deprivation of exploitation of the palm grove to allow it to mature. And, fun fact; it also means “tuna” in French).
USAID has been in Senegal since the passing of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 which effectively established the Agency to combine the efforts of various foreign assistance programs. For these past six decades USAID has worked together with Senegal and its development partners to create sustainable solutions to economic challenges. A key component to this partnership is to encourage and support the economic growth of women to improve the everyday lives of Senegalese families. In celebration of the 60 year anniversary of USAID in Senegal, the stories of eight women who have benefited from USAID activities and projects in the country are featured.
