The U.S. Government is celebrating sixty years of partnership and collaboration with the Government of Senegal through various activities highlighting the enduring relationship between the two nation’s citizens.  The U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) is also marking its 60 years as a government agency dedicated to development cooperation with partner countries around the world.

USAID donated medical equipment to improve the functionality of Malem Hodar district’s rural maternity hospitals

On March 24, 2021, the U.S. Government through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) donated medical equipment valued at an estimated 20 million francs CFA ($36,000 USD) to the Malem Hodar health district in Kaffrine to improve the functionality of 75% of the district’s rural maternity hospitals. The medical equipment includes delivery tables, autoclaves, and electrocardiograph machines.

In recent years, there has been an extraordinary increase in illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, which threatens to wipe out all the efforts made by the Government of Senegal and the actors involved in the sustainable management of fisheries. This form of fishing causes a loss for Senegal estimated at 150 billion CFA francs (US$272 million) per year. It also contributes to overfishing, and the loss of biodiversity and livelihoods.

Senegal has made considerable efforts to improve its education system, which have led to some increases in primary school enrollment and strategies to improve quality. However, it still faces challenges in improving student performance. In response, the Ministère de l’Education nationale (MEN), or the Ministry of National Education, has made reading one of its priorities for boosting learning outcomes.
