The U.S. government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), will provide a surge of resources to Tanzania through the Initiative for Global Vaccine Access, or Global VAX, a U.S. government effort to turn COVID-19 vaccines in vials into vaccinations in arms. USAID Administrator Samantha Power shared Tanzania’s selection as a Global VAX surge country in a meeting with Tanzania President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
Zanzibar’s First Vice President Hon. Othman Masoud Othman and USAID/Tanzania Mission Director V. Kate Somvongsiri presented $1,052,564.82 million in grants from the U.S. government to 14 youth organizations at the USAID Advancing Youth ceremony at the Zanzibar Beach Resort. Implemented in the Iringa, Mbeya, and Zanzibar regions, USAID Advancing Youth supports rural youth, aged 15-35, to engage in agribusiness and other rural value chains and increase their economic opportunities while promoting leadership and healthy lifestyles.

For six decades, USAID has built its reputation as a world leader in international development by partnering with countries around the world to strengthen communities and improve lives.
Today, representatives from the United States government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and the government of Tanzania celebrated their continued partnership to advance quality education in Tanzania through the launch of the new Jifunze Uelewe (“Learn and Understand”) activity. The four and a half year, $38.5 million activity aims to sustainably improve the literacy and numeracy for all pre-primary and primary education learners in Morogoro, Iringa, Mtwara, Ruvuma, and Zanzibar.

Through strong collaboration and enduring partnership with the government of Tanzania, the $222 million dollar, five-year Boresha Afya activities improved health outcomes for millions of Tanzanians in 12 regions across the country.
Today, in Dodoma, the United States government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) officially launched the Strengthening COVID-19 Case Management in Regional Referral Hospitals project. Key attendees were the Director of Emergency Preparedness and Response Dr. Elias Kwesi, and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Aifello Sichalwe. The new project aims to ensure health facilities provide the best care for COVID-19 patients with critical needs, ultimately improving their chances and speed of recovery. The project will strengthen health care workers’ management of these cases to enable an effective, lifesaving, and sustainable COVID-19 response.
Today, the United States Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and Ng’wilabuzu Ndatwa Ludigija, District Commissioner of Ilala, handed over income generating business startup kits and office materials to local beneficiaries. The business startup kits were distributed through USAID’s Kizazi Kipya (“New Generation”) activity. They provide means for youths to excel in fields such as tailoring, carpentry, masonry, baking, plumbing, hair dressing, catering, and food production.
U.S. Ambassador to Tanzania Dr. Donald Wright today announced new U.S. support for the Zanzibar Ministry of Health’s efforts to detect and respond to disease outbreaks, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic. Ambassador Wright made the announcement during the Inauguration Ceremony of the new Zanzibar Public Health Emergency Operations Center (ZPHEOC), which was established with support from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as well as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Global Fund. Ambassador Wright inaugurated the facility in the presence of Zanzibar Minister of Health Nassor Mazrui. Also in attendance were Dr. Ghirmay Andemichael, World Health Organization Representative, and Nelson Msuya, Representative of the Global Fund.
Tanzania – on April 20, the United States Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), held a live webinar to celebrate advancements to basic education made through five years of the Tusome Pamoja (“Let’s Read Together”) activity and two years of the Hesabu na Elimu Jumuishi (“Inclusive Arithmetic and Education”) activity.
