Statement by Acting Administrator Gloria Steele

Today, I am proud to recognize President Biden’s commitment to improving the lives of beneficiaries, particularly women and girls, around the world by revoking the January 23, 2017 Presidential Memorandum (The Mexico City Policy), thereby rescinding the Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance (PLGHA) policy. This action means that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will again benefit from an expanded partner base able to implement U.S. global health assistance. This includes increasing access to critical health services, such as HIV/AIDS care for key populations, family planning information and services, and effective tuberculosis diagnosis and treatment. Our efforts help promote safe motherhood, improve the health of mothers and their children, and increase educational and economic opportunities for women and girls.

Statement by Acting Administrator John Barsa

Today, we celebrate one of the most groundbreaking inventions in human history. On October 29, 1969, researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Stanford University first connected over a long-distance computer network. The teams only sent two letters before the receiving computer crashed, but those first bits of data marked the first Internet transmission in history.

24-09-2019

For many years, development agencies acted as though they were the only legitimate drivers of progress.  And when you think about it, it made some sense. Our partner countries were still emerging from communism and colonialism and they had tremendous needs.  And so we stepped forward with material assistance: food, medicine, books, buildings. Or we lent people, doctors, nurses, teachers, engineers. And we did it, in part, because if we didn't, who would?

19-09-2019

U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Mark Green will travel to New York City, from September 23-27, 2019 to participate in the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

As part of the continued commitment by Vice President Pence, Secretary Pompeo, and USAID Administrator Green to support ethnic and religious minorities in Iraq as highlighted earlier this year at the first-ever Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom, the United States is proud to announce over $178 million in U.S. foreign assistance to support these vulnerable communities in Iraq. This brings total U.S. assistance for this population to nearly $300 million since Fiscal Year 2017, implemented by both the State Department and USAID.

I believe that we are shaping an Agency that is capable of leveraging our influence, authority, and available resources to literally transform the way that humanitarian and development assistance are provided. Alongside the rest of the world, it will help us better meet the daunting challenges that we see today. With your support and guidance, we will ensure that USAID remains the world's premiere international development agency and continues the important work we do each day to protect America's future security and prosperity.
