Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) recognizes International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia. Commemorated in more than 130 countries, the day marks the anniversary of the World Health Organization in 1990 declassifying homosexuality as a mental disorder.

The U.S. government through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is providing $3.8 million in additional humanitarian assistance for people affected by the eruption of the La Soufrière volcano on the island of Saint Vincent. This additional support will provide thousands of people in Saint Vincent with emergency food assistance, access to safe drinking water, hygiene supplies, sanitary latrines, essential household items,and hygiene promotion activities to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other diseases in shelters and communities. The funds will also provide essential medical supplies and support for health facilities, as well as support for logistics to move, store, and distribute emergency items where they are needed.

On Thursday, May 13, 2021, USAID Administrator Samantha Power held two sessions aimed at promoting the work of activists and journalists confronting human rights abuses, fighting democratic backsliding, and exposing corruption as governments use the COVID-19 pandemic as an excuse to suppress dissent and tighten their grip on power.

Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Samantha Power met with Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Women Marise Payne to discuss shared development and humanitarian assistance priorities, especially the surge of COVID-19 cases in the Indo-Pacific region. Administrator Power and Minister Payne agreed to continue strong collaboration on pandemic response efforts in the region, as well as measures to address climate change and support women’s health including voluntary family planning, gender equality, and women’s economic empowerment.

Through a massive mobilization effort, the U.S. Government is delivering on its commitment to stand with the people of India as they fight a devastating second wave of COVID-19. Over the past week, the U.S. government rapidly deployed six planeloads of life-saving supplies to New Delhi in six days and mobilized its partners in India to immediately stand up surge support. Together, U.S. Government assistance to combat the current crisis is about $100 million. The United States is continuing to work closely with Indian officials and health experts to identify and respond to emerging trends in this ongoing crisis.

Afterwards, the Administrator provided remarks to the Agency’s workforce, in which she thanked the USAID workforce for their dedication to the mission and commitment to individual dignity.

Today, the Senate voted to confirm Ambassador Samantha Power as the nineteenth Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). USAID looks forward to her ceremonial swearing-in, scheduled to occur Monday, and the vast experience she will bring to the role as Administrator.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is shipping emergency humanitarian supplies from its Miami warehouse to help people on the island of Saint Vincent affected by the eruption of La Soufrière volcano. La Soufrière has erupted repeatedly since April 9, forcing large-scale evacuations, covering Saint Vincent island with ashfall, and polluting air and water sources. More than 13,000 people have had to evacuate their homes.

Yesterday, Vice President Harris announced that the United States is providing $310 million in increased assistance to the Northern Triangle, including $255 million in assistance to meet immediate and urgent humanitarian needs for people in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, refugees, other displaced people, and vulnerable migrants in the region. The assistance includes approximately $104 million from the Department of State, $125 million provided by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and $26 million through the Department of Defense.
