Yesterday, Administrator Samantha Power participated in a virtual fireside chat with David Malpass, President of the World Bank Group, at the World Bank Spring Meetings high-level event on Scaling up Vaccine Deployment. They discussed global efforts to turn COVID-19 vaccines into vaccinations, including recent country successes in driving up vaccination rates and examples of progress from USAID’s work in the field. They also discussed what actions are now demanded of all stakeholders, especially to address critical COVID-19 vaccine financing gaps.
USAID’s Meeting Targets and Maintaining Epidemic Control (EpiC) project is assisting health facilities in Vietnam’s focal provinces to improve the quality of clinical care for COVID-19 patients. In the first quarter of the year, EpiC collaborated with Ho Chi Minh University of Medicine and Pharmacy and Hanoi Medical University Hospital to offer a variety of comprehensive training packages in case management, infection prevention and control, community-based care, and mental health. The training leveraged the expertise of 23 facilitators to offer 111 hours of virtual instruction, which reached an estimated 9,500 healthcare workers. These beneficiaries of the program have provided detailed feedback on additional areas they want to learn about as the project transitions from surge funding to sustained support for clinical case management.
Thanks to the American people's generosity and in partnership with COVAX, 90,090 doses of the Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine have been donated to Bhutan, in coordination with the Bhutan Foundation and UNICEF, to fight the pandemic. These safe and effective vaccines will protect lives in Bhutan and help prevent dangerous new variants from spreading.
With an additional 3.5 million Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines arriving in Jakarta on April 3, the United States has donated 35.8 million doses to Indonesia and over a half billion vaccines to more than 110 countries in every region of the world. As of March 17, the United States has delivered over 500 million COVID-19 vaccines globally—more doses than any other nation. For every vaccine administered in the United States, nearly one more has been shipped overseas. This is an important milestone, achieved in just nine months, towards reaching President Biden’s pledge to donate more than 1.2 billion safe and effective vaccines worldwide.
On April 1, 2022, Administrator Power met with Bono, cofounder of ONE and (RED), to discuss the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the continuing deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Ukraine.
