Today, the United States—through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is supporting the Consortium for Elections and Political Processes (CEPPS) partners, the International Republican Institute (IRI) and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) and their local partners to support a variety of activities in support of a free and fair election thorough Supporting Sound, Representative 2022 Presidential Elections in Timor-Leste Activity. The presidential election in March 2022 will be the first election held in Timor-Leste during the pandemic. To quickly address urgent challenges in advance of this election, USAID Voter education and outreach initiatives will engage women, youth, rural voters and other traditionally marginalized communities, and the support of a domestic election observation mission will help to ensure electoral integrity.
USAID under the Democracy, Human Rights, and Governance Learning, Evaluation and Research (DRG LERII) Activity has commissioned a counter-trafficking in persons (C-TIP) Assessment in Timor-Leste to document the relative frequency and types of TIP, country-specific trends, knowledge of and attitudes towards TIP by stakeholders, and country capabilities to address TIP. A desk review started in November 2021 and researchers started training regarding the focus group discussion protocol/sampling approach in early January. A Timorese NGO is supporting the data collection.
U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Tom Daley and U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director Zema Semunegus commemorated the strengthening of U.S.-funded water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) measures at the Venilale Community Health Center in Baucau. With $500,000 in funding support from the United States through USAID, the project advanced efforts to strengthen WASH systems in community health centers throughout Timor-Leste in partnership with the Ministry of Health and UNICEF.
Timor-Leste is celebrating an important cultural milestone. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has announced that the country’s application for the inscription of its hand-woven traditional textile, known locally as Tais, as an “Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding” has been successful.
Today, the United States and Timor-Leste broke ground on a U.S.-funded isolation facility in Baucau that will help treat COVID-19 patients and offset the strain on existing medical facilities.
